The Picachos Dam is one of the most ambitious development projects that have been generated in southern Sinaloa in recent years. This investment was needed to boost local agriculture and prevent the problem of failing water supply in nearby towns. It also has great potential to become the center of new tourism development, with its own character that's typical of the region.

It was built in an area encompassing the towns of Casas Viejas and Las Iguanas in the municipality of Concordia, as well as the villages of Copales, El Placer, La Puerta de San Marcos and San Marcos, in Mazatlan. The reservoir has the capacity to store 580 million cubic meters (mm3) in its entirety, but when it reaches the 322 million cubic meter mark, it pours the excess water in a controlled manner into the Presidio River, which flows into the town of El Rosario.  [Baluarte]

The villagers have been relocated, and many of them will be granted concessions for the exploitation of aquaculture and recreational fishing in the dam. Outdoor excursion tourism is also expected to increase with this new destination, where visitors may experience the local flora and fauna of the region firsthand, as well as appreciate its unique landscapes and definite beauty.
